Carrington ND Blizzard - December 13-16, 2022

Happy Thursday to everyone! Right now (Thursday, December 15, 2022) I'm sitting at my computer, watching the snow blow sideways outside my window.  For those of you who don't live in the Carrington area, we're in the midst of a blizzard.  By tomorrow evening, it will have been snowing for four straight days.

This blizzard reminded me of a book that I picked up at the Carrington Library a few days ago: The Relentless Blizzard of 1966 by Douglas Ramsey and Larry Skroch.  Hopefully, our current storm won't cause anywhere near the damage/devastation that the 1966 blizzard caused.

The pictures and stories from folks who lived through that storm are simply incredible. A section in the book which tells about the Carrington/Foster County area made me wonder if you or anyone else in our Memories of Carrington group experienced that 1966 blizzard.  There were several names that I recognized... along with stories about their experiences.

Dr. Vogelwede was stalled for 31 hours on the road between Carrington and New Rockford without food or water. Luckily, he had sleeping bags to protect him from the cold... and was unharmed when two truckdrivers came along and rescued him.

Don and Ron Theis went out to get some bales of hay from a stack near their barn and completely lost their bearings.  They wandered around for hours before they found a fence a mile away which led back to their barn.

The Vernon Topp family, in the midst of calving season, spent the time shoveling snow away from their herd of cattle in order to protect them.  Without power for forty-five hours, they used kerosene lamps and had one pot of coffee to last them through that time.

The Foster County Independent said that "...it was one of the worst storms of recorded history."  KDAY became the voice for emergency services and messages from people around the area.

For those of you who experienced that blizzard, please let us know about it from your point of view.  By the way, I'm going to stop typing now because our electricity keeps going off for split seconds at a time and may go off completely at any minute.  #memories #1966blizzard #carringtonnd #carringtonndnews

Fruit Baskets for Veterans - Carrington, ND 2022

Marlene Boyer, Gayle Kuss, Charlotte Nelson, Bernice Sandvol

The American Legion and VFW Auxiliary ladies got together this week to make and deliver fruit baskets to our local veterans and their wives who are in nursing/assisted living homes in Carrington and New Rockford.

They gathered at Marlene Boyer's home to create the baskets... and as you can see, it was a warm, Christmassy, comfortable place to work and think about the sacrifices and service that these men and women had given to our country.

Several of these veterans had served during the Korean War in the early 50's in a snow-covered terrain much like the scene you can see through Marlene's windows.

Many of the men on both sides of the war died at that time due to the type of weather that we've experienced recently in North Dakota.

As the Auxiliary ladies stomped through the snow in a minus-22-degree temperature to deliver the fruit baskets, they thought about the extreme conditions and hardships that many of our veterans experienced... away from home, family and friends they loved.

The ladies hoped that their fruit baskets would express their love, gratitude and admiration for them... and let them know that they are still remembered with appreciation for their service to our precious America.

St. Alexius Medical Center - Carrington, ND

St. Alexius Medical Center, Carrington, ND

Hello Everyone, I just want to remind you that the CHI St. Alexius Medical Center's ER is open 24/7 here in Carrington.

Even during inclement weather, such as we're having now, and even though the clinic is closed, the Emergency Room is still available.  As a community, we really need to appreciate the fact that we have a medical center so accessible to us.

On Tuesday, before the major part of this recent storm hit, I called to see if they could work me into their schedule, to check my ankle which I thought might be fractured from a fall.  I got to see Dr. Page within an hour from my call, had an x-ray taken, and had assurances from him that my ankle wasn't broken.

Everyone at the clinic was exceptionally nice and helpful... the receptionist, the nurses, the x-ray technician, as well as Dr. Page.

It just made me realize how blessed we are to have such a nice medical facility right here in Carrington... just a few minutes from most of our homes... and especially comforting during a medical emergency.

(While I was waiting to see Dr. Page, I took a few pictures of the reception room and a couple on the way to get an x-ray.

As you can see, the little blue angel was surrounded by snow, and the temperature gage was crowned with it.

Now that I'm writing this on Wednesday evening, they may be completely covered! The snow keeps falling and is supposed to continue into Friday.  I hope you all stay safe, and although we have a great emergency room available, I hope you don't have to use it due to these dangerous weather conditions.)

Festival of Trees & Wreaths - December/2022 - Carrington, ND

Carrington's Annual Festival of Trees & Wreaths took place at the Federated Church this year.

Donated by local businesses, organizations and individuals, the trees and wreaths were on display from 1-3pm on Saturday, December 3, 2022.

Visitors were able to come and enjoy the beautifully decorated items, as well as buy tickets to have a chance to win one of them at the end of the event.

The funds raised were to be used by the Carrington Area Ministerial Association which is well known for helping those in need around our local area.

A big thanks to everyone who contributed a tree or wreath, as well as to everyone who took part in organizing and supporting this worthy event!
